MISSIONS

We see ourselves as missionaries, being sent into every area of our life, and all over the world, with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We celebrate God's gathering us as a new community and then sending each of us, and we are encouraged and blessed as we live in the fullness of the joy of our salvation as a community sent with God's gifts. SPC is a community where the Spirit shapes us with new life, profound faith, surprising joy and laughter, and where the Spirit welcomes everyone into the love of God.

Some amazing and amusing and grace filled moments happen at Amazing Grace.

The April 20 session had its share.  Since it was Holy Week and just a few days until Easter, a brightly colored hard cooked egg and a mini chocolate bunny were placed on each tray and the dinner guests were delighted with the holiday theme.

We have shifted to our summer menu of cold cuts, potato salad, baked beans, hard cooked eggs, bread and dessert.

An extra special moment occurred around a pair of “Heelies” (tennis shoes with roller wheels in the heels).

These were a beautiful shade of royal blue, in good condition, and had been donated by a neighbor of Dave Maher.  There was a single mom eating dinner with her three sons.  I offered them to her, but she said (very firmly)’ “I already told my boys ‘No’ to those skating shoes.  But there is another mother here with children.  Why don’t you ask her?”  So, at the opposite corner of the hall, I found a mom with three pretty little girls.  The brown eyes of the little one across the table just got huge at the sight of those blue “heelies”.  I asked the mom if she would like them and her story poured out:  Mom was out of work and had no money, that little one had a birthday next week, her only wish was for a pair of those “heelies”.  Mom almost cried as she hugged me and the most gorgeous smile spread across the little one’s face.  I found the fanciest bag we had and put those now-treasured “heelies” inside and wished her “Happy Birthday” from all of us.

There is an on-going need for underwear and socks for both men and women.  The toiletries always disappear, especially shampoo, soap, deodorant, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, washcloths, and shaving cream.  The men’s clothing is always in need, too, especially tee shirts, pants, shorts, and short sleeved shirts.  To donate any of these items, just bring them to church on Sunday and put them by the Mission table.  Thanks for your help.

Cold water and PBJ sandwiches are manna in the desert to the homeless on a warm summer day.

The Mission Commission is distributing both on the first Wednesday of the summer months.

Ken Coonrad drives the truck and others hand out the water and sandwiches.

We are collecting bottled water, creamy peanut butter, jelly, and sandwich bags for this project.

MISSION COMMISSION - DECEMBER 2010

Thank you Summerlin Presbyterian Church for a beautiful, giving month of December!!  It was Wednesday, December 15, a chilly dark night – and it seemed that there were so many needy souls that night at Amazing Grace.  We didn’t have very many razors, bottles of shampoo, toothpaste tubes, bars of soap or tubes of lip balm to share and what we had was soon gone.  We did have a few warm jackets – what a treasure they were to the lucky recipients!!  The needy were a hungry lot that night and the dinner of meatballs, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans and dessert smelled so good and were gratefully scarfed down.

At the end of the meal, SPC’s version of Santa was waiting to gift each person with a special bundle consisting of a blanket, a hat, a pair of gloves, and socks.  THANK YOU to “55 Alive”, the folks who purchased soup and cookie mixes, and those who donated money and goods so the Mission Commission could bundle up those gifts for the very poor and homeless.

Please don’t stop being so generous!!  We need all sorts of toiletries (soap, deodorant, lip balm, razors, shaving cream, and shampoo) for our next Amazing Grace night (January 19).  There will still be requests for warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, washcloths, towels, blankets, jeans, long sleeved shirts, etc.

SPC was given an opportunity to adopt a family of five (one grandma, two brothers and two sisters) for Christmas.
The response to their request by YOU, our congregation, was overwhelming!!!  You provided four well stuffed stockings, toys, clothing (four new outfits for each child, plus some for grandma), new shoes for all, food for Christmas dinner, and several meals afterwards. Many thanks to the shoppers, the organizers, and wrappers that pulled this effort together in record time and the presenters of our gifts to the family on December 22.

Reports that reached SPC last Sunday said the family was so grateful and gracious, the kids polite, the baby was very
cute and huggable, and grandma just cried grateful tears.

Note:  water contributions are always needed and appreciated.

The Mission Commission is sponsoring a Fall Garage sale, probably the first weekend in October.  So save your stuff (except for Amazing Grace items) for the Garage sale.  Help will be greatly appreciated and needed.
